Swedish Heritage Route
The Swedes in Germany

People flying kites on a sandy beach off the Baltic coast

An island excursion is the best way to explore Usedom and its equally fascinating foreshore. A cycle tour following romantic river valleys, through wooded marshes and along verdant tree-lined avenues takes you to numerous important sites of German-Swedish history. The road takes you through historical town centres, past legendary castles and ruins, stately homes and manor houses. Reminders of the Swedish Era are everywhere, allowing you to learn much about the history of the Swedes in Western Pomerania and Brandenburg. The German language has expressions that have their roots in the Swedish Era. The term "Schwedentrunk" (Swedish drink) has its origins during the Thirty Years War when farmers were threatened with having to drink slurry if they did not reveal where they had hidden their valuables. Many cycle paths have inline skating tracks running parallel, catering for the real activity enthusiasts.

But it is also possible to explore the region on horseback, galloping along the Baltic coast or trotting across golden fields of rapeseed and green meadows. Excursions in the Uckermark region are also very likely to reveal traces of Swedish history. This is the land of a thousand lakes, which also boast many rivers and canals. It is a firm favourite not only with water sports enthusiasts, but also for houseboat holidays and other types of boating. Water babies of all ages are in their element in, on and by the water. There is plenty of flora and fauna to discover in the national parks and nature reserves, including the crane roosts which are such a familiar feature of this region. The scenery either side of the Swedish Heritage Route is one of amazing beauty and diversity. It really has something to offer for everyone. The region's hospitable people are looking forward to your visit and have a number of special tips up their sleeves, making this a simply unforgettable holiday experience.
